Book review: Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel by Lucy Foley

I don’t like historical fiction and that includes historical crime fiction. I do however, love all-things Agatha Christie and had a huge collection of her books bought from second-hand bookstores in the late 1980s or early 1990s. In recent years we’ve seen Sophie Hannah revisit Hercule Poirot and now Lucy Foley has resurrected Miss Marple. On checking old posts here – looking for one which references my absolute fave TV Miss Marple – I was reminded that in 2022 Harper Collins UK had twelve different authors re-imagine Dame Agatha’s Miss Marple so I wonder if that was some sort of ‘try-out’ before Foley got the guernsey. Who knows… either way, I think she does a good job at enacting the original.

Book review: The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley

The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley is the third book I’ve read by the British author and I’ve enjoyed them all. She seemingly draws on long-kept secrets and develops intriguing and complex plots around relationships – testing family ties and friendship boundaries. Here the launch of a new luxurious wellness retreat brings together a disparate group of story tellers (in the present) and a diary-writer (in the past), the two converging in fresh tragedy as past secrets are revealed.

Book review: Marple – Twelve New Mysteries

It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of Agatha Christie – in particular all-things-Miss Marple who is my favourite Christie crime-solver (followed by Poirot and very distantly by the Beresfords). I’ve written before also about my favourite Miss Marple actress who (despite my usual lack of visual-ness) I ‘picture’ when I think of Miss Marple.

Anyhoo, like everything it seems… everything old is new again and several well-known authors have contributed to an anthology featuring my very favourite female detective.

Book review: The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

Lucy Foley’s 2021 novel The Guest List was popular with readers and critics alike so it bodes well that I actually enjoyed her latest novel The Paris Apartment even more. It’s choc-o-block full of twists and surprises – bumping this up to a rare 4.5 star rating from me.

However… I have to confess the unlikeability of basically ALL of the characters meant I was tempted to be less generous. Though, of course I realise (in some ways) Foley’s issuing a challenge to we readers to dislike yet engage with [our lead protagonist in particular] at the same time.

Book review: The Guest List by Lucy Foley

I’ve heard of Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Party and assumed for a moment I’d read it. But it seems it was most likely a book I’d admired from afar, so The Guest List is my first book from the English author.

It’s not out in Australia until later this month but I did notice it’s been released elsewhere so decided to move it up my reading pile. Naturally it meant an extended bath* as once I started I had to keep reading until I’d turned the last page!
