Book review: The Hiding Place by Jenny Quintana

The Hiding Place is the third novel I’ve read by Jenny Quintana. Looking at my ratings and reviews, my appreciation of her books is pretty consistent. I enjoy them and usually read them in a sitting.

I notice I’ve commented before on the pacing or found their conclusions unsatisfying however, and it was the same here.

It was only when I was in bed after I’d finished reading, that certain factors played on my mind. If you’ve read the book you might also have wondered about Connie’s luggage including the letter from her lover. Why did Quintana make the current tenant of flat one so elusive and felt like an unfollowed thread? And why did Marina try to talk to everyone but Mrs Hyde?

Of course the fact I was pondering it hours after closing the book is probably also a good thing.

Book review: Our Dark Secret by Jenny Quintana

Our Dark Secret is Jenny Quintana’s second novel. Her first, The Missing Girl, (shockingly about a girl going missing, though also its impact on those left behind) which I read and reviewed, was published in 2017.

As this book’s about the discovery of skeletal remains and unfolds in a couple of timeframes ,there’s again a theme around past events and… secrets.

Book review: The Missing Girl by Jenny Quintana

I read a lot of books about kids going missing. In retrospect perhaps it was for the best that I didn’t have children myself, or I may have been paralysed with fear… worrying about all of the terrible things that could happen to them. Or perhaps I’d be adept at pocketing the stuff I read and watch into some place in my mind – recognising (for the most part) they’re only part of my fictional world.

This debut novel by Jenny Quintana centres around the disappearance of Gabriella and (in retrospect) the impact it has on her family and loved ones in the years that follow.
