Book review: Stolen in Death by JD Robb

October 29, 20262 min read

Stolen in Death by JD Robb is the 62nd book in the futuristic series featuring NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas, partner-in-work Detective Delia Peabody and partner-in-life Roarke. Here she’s on the trail of a thief-turned-murderer when a man is killed during the theft of emeralds and diamonds known as the Royal Suite from a secret vault. It hits a bit close to home for Dallas when she discovers that the original thief of the Royal Suite from the Tate Gallery 18 years earlier was no one other than an 18yr old Roarke.

Book review: Framed in Death by JD Robb

December 9, 20252 min read

Framed in Death by JD Robb was a score from a local second hand book store. Although I was a religious reader of the series I haven’t received a lot of recent In Death books for review so my reading (from book 53 and on) has been a bit hit and miss. So I was surprised to stumble over Robb’s very-recent 2025 offering. I always find it fascinating what Robb (Nora Roberts) envisages for our future… some of the books’ inclusions have already come to life (AI etc) but others (flying cars, off-planet prisons)… not yet. Though of course we do have 30+ years to catch up.

Book review: Bonded in Death by JD Robb

December 11, 20242 min read

Bonded in Death by JD Robb opens with a prologue set in 2026 as the Urban Wars neared their conclusion… which started a few years earlier (ie about now in JD Robb / Nora Roberts’s world so let’s hope she’s not psychic). We don’t spend much time in the past however before moving to the present (40 years later) in Robb’s futuristic series. And for those who’ve been following the series for a long time, it’s pretty easy to guess that this book will hit close-to-home for NYPD cop Eve Dallas and her mega-wealthy husband Roarke… given their majordomo-cum-father-figure-to-Roarke (Summerset) often talks about his work with the Resistance during the Urban Wars.

Book review: Desperation in Death by JD Robb

September 7, 20222 min read

I’d dropped off a new release email listing so missed the 54th book in JD Robb’s In Death series. It’s the only one I’ve not read so far, as the series is a no-brainer must-read for me. I plan – on retirement (or similar) – to sit down and re-read one book after the other. I’ve mentioned before (many times) that Robb (ie. Nora Roberts) sets the books over a short amount of time and almost no time passes in and between books.

So, even though I’d missed one book in the series I assumed I hadn’t missed any big events which seemed to be the case. Though I gather the theme of the previous book and this one – are both a little close to home for Lieutenant Eve Dallas given her wretched beginnings.

Book review: Forgotten in Death by JD Robb

September 29, 20213 min read

JD Robb’s In Death series is a go-to read for me. I’ve not missed any and own most of the series. Forgotten in Death is number 53 and Nora Roberts’s creations – Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her mega-rich hubby Roarke are still going strong.

I hate the ‘guilty pleasure’ phrase as it implies there’s something wrong with what you’re enjoying but (as I’ve said before) these are akin to a comfort read. There’s a predictability – or rather reliability – about the characters and their behaviour as well as the overall story arc, but Robb / Roberts always offers readers a whodunnit that’s a bit different, though I’m not sure how she manages after so many.

Book review: Faithless in Death by JD Robb

February 20, 20212 min read

Faithless in Death is JD Robb/Nora Roberts’ 52nd book in the Eve Dallas / Roarke (In Death) series and it’s probably the best I’ve read for some time.

I appreciate that Robb manages to come up with new plots and offers readers something different in each outing and I suspect it’s that, along with the like-ability of her main cast that keeps readers like me coming back. Again and again. And again and again. Well, 52 times.

Book review: Shadows In Death by JD Robb

September 8, 20202 min read

Shadows In Death is the 51st in the futuristic cop series by JD Robb. So, author Nora Roberts (writing as Robb) is obviously doing something right. The series kicked off in 1995 but—as I’ve mentioned before—our characters traverse time slowly so, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her billionaire hubby really only exist when we’re there to see them. Just like Santa Claus. Except the opposite.

Here, Robb offers us something a little different. The ‘crime’ in question happens early, which isn’t uncommon. But usually we would spend the rest of the novel trying to work out whodunnit. Here Eve and her offsider, the delightful Detective Delia Peabody solve this pretty quickly. It’s murder for hire but things get complicated when Roarke’s (kinda sordid and unlawful) past comes back to haunt him (and those he cares about).

Book review: Golden in Death by JD Robb

February 6, 20203 min read

JD Robb’s ‘In Death’ futuristic cop series is one of my ‘go-to’ reads. The arrival of a new instalment leap-frogs anything else in my to-be-read pile or reading queue. Golden in Death actually arrived on its publication day so I was completely justified in delving into it straight away.

Embarrassingly I really didn’t twig (for some time) that the book’s title was a nod to the fact that this is the 50th in the series. D’oh!
