Five things I’m loving right now

Monday, February 13, 2017 Permalink

I’ve struggled with the last few topics the lovely Denyse Whelan has proffered for her Monday ‘Life this week’ link-ups. Indeed, my post about routines (and my to-do lists) is wallowing in my drafts folder, along with last week’s post pondering ‘how much money is enough?’

This week – as it happens – has been no different. The topic is love, and my immediate response was to write something about poor old 49 year old me who’s never been ‘in love’ or ‘loved’ (romantically). And how it shits me that others take that for granted (ie. being loved) while I blame my weight and various other nuances for my eternal singleness.

But again I’m tired of overthinking all that stuff, so I’m taking the easy way out and talking about ‘other’ stuff I love. More specifically, things I’m loving right now*!

1. My house
I tried to do one of those ‘things I’m grateful for’ challenges recently but almost every day ‘my house’ was the only thing that came to mind. I’m more contented (at home) than I’ve been in many MANY years and have become absurdly house-proud. I’m again buying a ‘housey’ magazine each month to ponder on decorating improvements.

2. Netflix
Like everyone else in Australia who’s discovered this cheap import I’m loving it. There are SO many shows still to watch (or re-watch) and I haven’t even scanned the movies. Better still, it’s got lots of kids’ stuff, which is great for my younger visitors. (I must have watched 50 episodes of the witty and educational Odd Squad while babysitting this weekend!)

3. Dancing in the Dark
I tried this class for the first time last week and wasn’t sure what it involved or how I’d cope with ‘freestyle dancing in a darkened room for an hour’, but I loved it. And wrote about it in my local blog.

4. Outsourcing
I’m not exactly sure I can afford it all on my part-time salary but I’ve already got a monthly cleaner and mowing company. The cleaners are a relief as they mop floors and clean bathrooms… so do the things I hate. And the mowing guys are a necessity as I’ve got a double block of land. Of course the lack of rain this year means I haven’t needed them YET in 2017, although one of my gardens could probably do with a bit of work.

I’m a big believer in outsourcing – when it comes to stuff you don’t have time or skills for – IF you can afford it of course.

5. My changing mindset
I’ve written here recently about some of my fairly anal thought-processes: my love/hate relationship with to-do lists; and some arbitrary rules I impose on myself. It seems I’m finally questioning some of this stuff and easing off on myself a little.

It’s a struggle as there’s some element of guilt I’m not still as ambitious as I feel I should be (am not yet of an age to retire so I SHOULD still be focussed on work and earning an income) and then a realisation that contentment and happiness is – perhaps – within my grasp. IF I continue to make some changes.

It’s a slow process and really quite challenging. I’ve been up and down a bit lately as I overanalyse it all death, but I think it’s been more positive than negative.

And there you have it. Five things I’m loving right now. I did contemplate including their counterparts… the yang to their yin or something: work and commitments; lack of exercise; the heat; menopause; my motivation and so forth, but decided it’s best to keep it upbeat for a change!

What are you loving at the moment?

* Note I’m talking stuff or things. Not people. Cos hopefully those in my life know how important they are to me.

Love your list & also loving seeing your style come through in your home pics & the style shots you’ve been instagramming of late.

Ha! The pre-fat me was a huge fan of fashion and clothes… don’t think I’ll ever return to that level of interest!

I would love a house cleaner! Dancing in the dark sounds interesting – I haven’t heard of that before so might check if there is one in Brisbane. It makes me feel warm when I write down the things i love and I hope you felt good at the end of your post. What I’m loving right now is my darling almost 3 year old grandson, who thinks his Nan can do anything including rockclimbing and playing on the equipment at the playground. He bring me such joy and shows me life through his eyes. I’m smiling as I write this. Have a beautiful day Deb. Sue from Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond.

Dancing in the dark definitely exists in Brisbane Sue as a couple of friends who put me onto it are Brisbanites. One lives in New Farm and the other at West End and they both do classes there.

Great post Deborah – plenty to love in it and how wonderful that your nest is so comforting and pleasurable for you.
I love mother nature, despite her sometimes challenging moods, I love hanging out in the blogosphere with others like you, I love delicious food cooked by others…..

Ah yes… food cooked by others is always exciting. I’m lucky in that my mother loves cooking and I often get her leftovers or she makes up stuff especially for me!!! #spoilt

Netflix is the absolute greatest. I actually get overwhelmed with how much stuff I want to watch on it though! Hehe

oh, man, your rug is spectacular! I’m glad to hear that you’re letting up on yourself, changing focus and mindset has an amazing impact on how you feel about things (but please don’t infer from that that I have any clue what I’m talking about, changing mindset is one of my goals for this year, I’ve been reading tonnes about it!)

I’ve made some big changes since the middle of 2016 Cate with another house-move (from a unit into a house), weight loss surgery and those two things alone were massive and resulted in lifestyle changes. I wasn’t completely content in my post seachange apartment and didn’t ever really feel ‘at home’ there so it’s different (and better) now. And yes, the rug was a Christmas / Birthday pressie from my mum and I love it!

I’m loving air conditioning! Your home is looking great. Seriously need to get on board with Netflix. We are the only strange people who don’t have it!

Netflix is really so affordable Ness, which I think is great!

Less so airconditioning but it’s a necessary evil at the moment!

One of the things I don’t like about being a renter is the inability to make changes to the house! Then again, I’d never buy the house we rent, so maybe it’s ok? 🙂

Yes… true Vanessa. You often see articles though re suggestions for rental properties that make them feel more homey!

Deb, well-done you! This is a great post and its been good to get to know more about Deb. I am so learning to get out of my analytical head and into my welcoming heart more…to stop thinking about stuff and start feeling some of it. Your lovely relationship with your young visitor is such a great LOVE I can see. I am so pleased to see that the artibrary list is getting a review…if not a full throw out!! Take care of your heart…your mind has done its job.. let it be and see where it takes you. Denyse xxThanks for linking up for #lifethisweek 7/52. Next Week: A Pet Story.

Im loving getting stuck into the 2nd game of thrones book. Much as i love it, it makes a welcome change to reading a screen!

      February 14, 2017

Ah yes… I still get a pretty good mix of print copies and ebooks. Review-wise I like ebooks as I can make notes as I go (via the app) whereas print copies require me to have a pen and paper handy (not great when you’re in the bath)… but in terms of books to keep I still much prefer hard copies!

I’m loving Netflix too! And I love what you said about outsourcing. It never occurred to me that I can actually do that. I also hate cleaning the bathroom so that’s a good suggestion. xx

When I worked full time, I had fortnightly cleaners. I lived alone but my apartment at the time was pretty big, but I had someone who came in for 2hrs every fortnight to do my floors (I hate mopping and sweeping) and bathrooms.

I just saw someone complaining on Facebook last night about having to clean maggots out of her rubbish bin and everyone advised her she should have found someone to do it and apparently there are heaps of organisations out there who clean bins. I’m a HUGE believer in outsourcing. (If only I could afford to do more of it!!!)

Nice list! I’d love to outsource cleaning! Can’t afford it yet but hoping we can soon. I’m loving the beach, Netflix, exercising again, my kitty cats, work and my photo-a-day Flourish project at the moment

    • Debbish
      February 15, 2017

      Ah, all good things Sanch!

I haven’t actually done the sums to work out if I can afford the cleaner yet so may need to tighten my belt in other ways! #eek

I am all for outsourcing too. At the moment we have very limited funds, but I fantasize about outsourcing the cleaning and laundry and cooking. I am so over cooking all the time! Although I think my personal chef dreams are a long way off!
