In my last post I pledged to go for at least one walk, or exercise ONCE while in my hometown for three days. It’s only day 1, but so far doing ANYTHING outside may be problematic as it hasn’t stopped raining.
My brother and I drove here late yesterday afternoon / early evening and it rained non-stop on the trip. Fortunately, though we were in my car and knowing of my hatred of driving (despite my lovely car) my brother drove… so I just had to sit and watch the falling rain and disappearing road for the nearly-4 hours it took us to get here.
After a yummy welcome home dinner (my mum made MY favourite) and some red wine, chit chat and TV; before going to bed I told mum I’d get up early for a walk… weather permitting.
Because we woke to rain, the weather wasn’t exactly permitting anything… or cooperating at all. The picture to the left shows part of the waterlogged front yard – and yes, that is a gnome. On purpose!
I should note that this weather which is expected to last a few days is problematic for a number of reasons, other than my promised walk. One of the reasons my brother was coming home was to do a few things around the house for my mum – although the list was a bit lot longer than expected (and some jobs on the whiteboard below are clearly doable by yours truly!)
Apparently I’m on umbrella-holding duty while my brother replaces the letterbox for mum (a priority for her given that the old one is sitting atop a rotting post!).
Obviously I’ll wait out the weather, hoping for a dry spell which allows me to go for a wander, but it occurred to me that if I was really serious about my exercise, I wouldn’t let the lack of gym or inclement weather hold me back. There are HEAPS of inside options – even if I’m not in my own place (where I have not-recently-used weights, a jogging trampoline, fitball and the like!). I’ve done enough gym and pilates classes to know that a homemade circuit with nil equipment and limited space is highly doable. I don’t even need weights given I have my own (hefty) bodyweight to work with.
Even I know that working those big muscle groups (via lunges, squats and the like) with some dips and pushups etcetera would actually give me a whole body workout and challenge me cardiovascularly if I move quickly between exercises.
Of course knowing and doing are entirely different things. I don’t feel quite desperate enough to frolic about my mother’s lounge room or step up and down her stairs. And… I have done 4 workouts this week already – including an unexpected circuit class, which confirmed my worry that my fitness had decreased a bit recently!
So, I won’t die in a ditch if I don’t get a workout in over these three days. In reality, given the 80/20 or 70/30 diet / exercise ratio of importance I probably need to focus more on my food.
So far, however, I’m doing okay and staying away from my danger food, though THIS (left) hasn’t helped (AND it’s my favourite – caramello!!!). My brother left it out after eating some last night and I wrapped it up and put it back in the fridge without licking my fingers or snorting the chocolate crumbs. Yay me! Hopefully my willpower muscle will remain on over coming days.
Wish me luck!
What’s your rainy day workout?

good luck!

Thanks Jo. So far so good!

Wow, you have some great willpower there. To touch the chocolate and not give into temptation takes sheer determination! Hope the rain clears and you can get out to exercise

Hi Stacey-Lee, I did get a short walk in, which is fine AND I’ve stayed away from chocolate! Amazing!

Why not enjoy the time at your mum’s and if weather permits go for a walk? But if the desire grabs you .. go for your circuit! You know what to do and will do the right thing for you!

Very true Vicki. Once I thought about the 2.5 and 1.5 sessions of cardio and strength (.5 being a circuit class involving both) I was less angsty about it all.

It’s so hard for me to exercise when the weather is nice. When it’s raining, I just give up… But hubby just bought a cross trainer so I guess I have no excuses any more!
July 14, 2012
Eek! No excuses now that’s for sure!

Deb ~
I am gonna be straight up with you. Do the exercise one way or another and cross it off your to-do list and you’ll feel great about it. You’re talking yourself out of what you said you would do… giving excuses… ummmm reasons why you don’t really need to do it THIS one time. And then how much easier will it be the next time you decide you don’t want to exercise because of the outside circumstances that have nothing to do with your health or physical capability? I’ve done it myself a million times. It is why I have been off the wagon for a few months now and gained back a chunck of weight that I paid a crapload of money and sweat and effort to lose… all down the drain because of talking myself out of one workout after another and eventually working out was no longer on my radar – other things have taken its place.
Of course, I’m just a youngin’ and you can take it or leave it, but at 33-35 yrs old… this is the third time in my young life of trying to lose over 100 lbs. Both the other times I gained it back. I have to learn how to change my whole lifestyle!! Otherwise, it (the weight) won’t stay off.
Take what you want and leave the rest.
Best of luck to you in getting the projects done 🙂

Thanks Runa – as I said, on one hand I’m okay with the 4 sessions I’ve done this week, but on the other I know that once I’ve committed to something I like to see it through. I don’t feel quite desperate enough to do a circuit here at home, but definitely if the rain stops I’ll head for a walk. (I actually don’t mind going for a walk here cos I like looking about to see what’s changed etc!).

Deb – so glad you got the chapstick – use it every time you want to eat the chocolate, and think of our commitment to a svelte future!

Ha Julia, will do!

I have been in the same situation as you only not as my Mom’s house – at my own house. Recently I just decided to just run anyway and not worry about the weather. Yes I got wet and yes it was a little cold but I showered as soon as I got home and felt so good for having been for a run. I guess at the end of the day, just do what works for you. I always remember what a good friend said to me “You never regret the run you go on but you often regret the run you don’t go on.”
Have a great weekend and take care. Stopping by from Team Friday.
Love, hugs and positive energy !

Thanks for your comment AND the hugs and positive energy – always welcomed and appreciated. We were out in the rain yesterday a few times and have been lucky that the rain is light and drizzly, so I’ve no excuses!

So here’s the thing: whether you choose to walk in the rain anyway, or not. Whether you choose the indoor circuit, or not. Own it and move on. You’ve got the choice, how fabulous is that? 🙂
July 14, 2012
True Karen. I don’t think I’m ‘desperate’ enough to do the indoor circuit and I like that I know that and don’t care. If I hadn’t exercised all week then I would be more worried and exercise would be more of a priority. Kinda nice (I think) to know WHAT my priorities are!

Hey Deb,
Great post! You have such a healthy perspective on things! I can get into a trap of thinking that I HAVE to do certain things and get so focussed I steal all the fun/joy out of it. You have reminded me that I can only do what I can do…
Good on you for not eating the chocolate either! Nice work!
Thanks for linking in with Team Friday!
July 16, 2012
Thanks… like to think my perspective is a lot better than it once was. I have had a very unhealthy attitude to exercise and food in the past. I ‘think’ I’ve got the exercise under control (in a control freak-less sort of way), but need to still work on the food component!

I find Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred it a great workout to do whilst traveling. The first level of the workouts (30 minutes) is on You Tube – so as long as I have access to a laptop, I’m good to go.
July 16, 2012
I hadn’t really thought of that Dannii. I don’t currently use any videos etc to workout to but definitely I’d usually have access to You Tube!
Good suggestion! (Makes more sense than leaping about doing my own cardio circuit!)
July 18, 2012
Hello there, hope your mum’j jobs got done. I’m so late in viewing all the posts from Team Friday, as usual! Good to have that balanced attitude about exercise, four workouts in a week is heaps anyway!!
July 18, 2012
Hi Seana – I’m behind in my blog reading as well (I found myself keen to just spend time with my mum and brother rather than hours at the computer when I do alone). We did get jobs done and I did get a walk in after all!
