Finding my voice – NaNoWriMo

Finding my voice – NaNoWriMo

I’m participating in NaNoWriMo as planned. And for the first time ever, I may well ‘win’ – which means I’ll reach the required 50,000 words during November. (I’m up to 39,951!)

I love writing and I’ve talked about this several times before… but I usually struggle for ideas, so the notion of a novel has always been a bit out of my reach.

ABB link-up: Elements of a good book review

ABB link-up: Elements of a good book review

An Aussie Book Bloggers link-up

Some time ago there was a discussion on the Aussie Book Bloggers’ Facebook page about reviewing books. A few people said they saw themselves as book bloggers, rather than book reviewers. I kinda feel like I ‘review’ books. In my blog. I’m not sure what that makes me, but… that’s okay.

Author interview: Ellie O’Neill

Author interview: Ellie O’Neill

I’m very pleased today to be sharing an interview with author Ellie O’Neill. Ellie’s debut novel, Reluctantly Charmed, was released earlier this month.

Reluctantly Charmed  brings together the lithesome world of Irish folklore and long-forgotten fairies and the cynical and obsessive nature of a world addicted to online technology. There’s some romance thrown in for good measure and (importantly) a bit of a moral to the story so – in a sense – it’s like a modern day fairytale. (Oh and I almost forgot… there’s chocolate. And The Hoff!!!)

The 2-space rule

The 2-space rule

I’m not supposed to be writing this. In fact, I need to download that software which forbids you from going online or opening other programs when you’re supposed to be focussing on something else.

However… I’m writing something and – as one does – cutting an pasting from an old document. And I noticed the thing I’m cutting and pasting from is very old as I’ve left TWO spaces after the end of each sentence.

Website vs blog

Website vs blog

After making my seachange almost two years ago I went along to a local writers’ group. As I live in a community popular with retirees, the average age of the writers in attendance was a fair bit older than moi. I introduced myself and talked about my writing.

Why I write

Why I write

Non bloggers will be bewildered. Or you know… not care at all. But bloggers will now be familiar with the blog hop thingy going around. Akin to the flu or measles. ‘Cept less debilitating.

I’ve been tagged by the lovely Lee-Anne to share ‘Why I write’. It’s actually come at a good time as it forced me to (properly) consider some stuff I’ve been pondering over recent weeks. And – for that reason I’ve reordered my questions a little!

National Book Bloggers Forum

I’m super-excited to have been selected* to attend the Penguin Random House inaugural National Book Bloggers Forum in Sydney next week.

I’ve long been an avid reader, but only started reviewing books (an unpaid gig sadly) late last year. I receive advance copies (which are sometimes yet to be graced with a final edit) and read an average of 3-5 books a week.

Some of my fondest early memories involve reading, books and stories and I’ve talked before about being *ahem* slightly (ahem) anal about my books and lending them to friends (as a child and now!).

The stuff that matters

The stuff that matters

I sometimes struggle with the notion of compromise. Now I know that’s not unusual… but the ‘wants vs needs’ thing has been playing on my mind of late and is particularly annoying because I thought I’d evolved more than that!

I left my old life because – although I wasn’t horribly depressed – I was far from happy. I spent my days and nights dreaming of something ‘more’ (or ‘else’) while waiting for life to start.
