I was very excited to see Judgement Prey by John Sandford pop up for review that I let it leap-frog over a heap of other books. And I’m even blessing it with a review on my much-esteemed website 😉 rather than just on Goodreads even though I only had an electronic copy. Because I freakin’ loved this book. I’m almost tempted to give it 4.5 stars except I was a smidge disappointed by the actual ‘who’ part of the whodunnit. It wasn’t left-field but let’s just say we weren’t given some of the clues we needed earlier and I do prefer an even playing field when it comes to the big reveal / finger-pointing thing.
I was a tad harsh on John Sandford and Virgil Flowers when we last caught up in Deep Freeze. In reality I missed the wild, irresponsible and irreverent Virgil who seemed much changed. Though in fairness to him he was facing fatherhood and monogamy for the first time ever.
Obviously it didn’t deter me as I was keen to rejoin Virgil (or ‘that fuckin Flowers’ as he’s known to most) on his latest exploits. And (other than the weird inclusion of bloody larceny involving children’s toys again – this time lego* instead of barbie dolls!) THIS was more the Sandford I know and love.
I do believe I’ve talked before about the series I read cos they comfort me. Not in a hot toddy and blanket way. Although maybe that is exactly how they comfort me… if a hot toddy involves alcohol of some sort…. but either way, what I’m saying is John Sandford’s Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers (aka that f*cking Flowers) series are a couple I rely on to get me through the hard times. And the easy times.
Any time really.
