Yet another week has flown by and – here in Australia – we’re finally getting glimpses of cooler weather. It’s Autumn here but our 30C+ days have mostly continued in my part of the country. I love winter – well, our Queensland winter where it only gets to low single digits (celsius) – so cannot wait for its arrival!
But enough about money, sex and politics… onto the important stuff – my weekly reading.
What I read
Umm… I probably shouldn’t introduced this with so much fanfare because I only read one – yes ONE – book this week. You may recall that I only read in the evening and I actually had a range of night-time commitments this past week so…. #alasalack
I started the week with Nicky Pellegrino’s Under Italian Skies and could very much relate to her lead character Stella. That review’s coming in days… well, when I finish it!
I finished listening to an audiobook while driving on a work trip. And I loved (Past The Shallows by Aussie author Favel Parrett) so much I’ve bought a ‘real’ copy already!
And I started… The One in a Million Boy… (but have only just started – while babysitting last night).
What I wrote
I’m still doing my post-every-day in April challenge and mostly enjoying it. I’ve had to plan ahead on a couple of occasions and this week will be the same.
There were a couple of book reviews:
The Obsession by Nora Roberts – an enjoyable read and one which started magnificently!
Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett – audiobook review… and I realised later I forgot to rave about how wonderfully she writes about the ocean and how it must reflect her passion and respect for it. #oops
Surfing the Menu by Dan Churchill and Hayden Quinn – a cookbook giveaway (open only to Australian residents)
As well as:
Feeling like a fraud – a post about imposter syndrome
Finding the right fit – me feeling like Goldilocks as all of the houses I find are too big or too small
What we share with others – a post about what we choose to share about ourselves and others.
What I did
I had some driving to do for work again… and have 7-8hrs of driving (for two meetings) on Monday (tomorrow). It will be a LONG day in the car by myself so I must try and organise another audiobook before then!
I went to an author event with TJ Hamilton. TJ’s a local and has published two books with Harlequin Australia. Her Thyme series features a wonderfully likeable and pragmatic prostitute Miranda. I’ve met TJ a few times and very much enjoyed hearing her speak, as well as talking to other avid readers.
What I plan to read and do
I had some new arrivals last week which will be added into my ever-growing TBR pile.
I have the long day of driving ahead of me tomorrow and a couple of other days of work, but also hope to get to my usual three books this coming week. I’m also ‘about’ to do something about putting my apartment on the market (which will require some preparation) so that should keep me off the streets.
And that’s about it for this week….
What’s on your agenda? Any reading?
As usual I’m linking up with Kimberly for the Sunday Post and Kathryn for ‘It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?‘
April 17, 2016
I only read one book this week too but made good progress in another. Considering the nice weather has started here that was pretty good for me. 🙂 Surfing the Menu is making me hungry just looking at it I think, I’ll have t go take a look. And interesting post on what we share with others… glad you had a nice week.
Best of luck with your apartment deliberations… 🙂
April 17, 2016
Thanks Greg. I ended up doing some VERY late night reading Saturday so made good progress on The One in a Million Boy – which was great.
And yes, some of those food pics are amazing!
April 17, 2016
While your gearing up for your winter I can’t wait for the heat! 🙂 It’s been pretty nice here but the nights are still a bit cool. Started planting some of my veggies.
Enjoy those books you got! 🙂
Stormi
April 17, 2016
Oh, good luck with the veges Stormi. Yes… roll on winter – but as I said – our winters are very mild where I am in the north of the country. No snow etc… but at least I get to wear sweatshirts! 🙂
April 17, 2016
I am excited to find out what you do finally decide to do re housing. Nice you can listen to audio books with all those big drives. I hate long drives so I don’t envy you!
April 17, 2016
I’m not looking forward to tomorrow’s Jess and I didn’t organise myself a decent book so desperately downloaded Wuthering Heights at the last minute!
April 17, 2016
Audio books and downloadable MP3s are my new favourites while I’m driving and also while I am doing some art. I seriously do not know how you do a ‘day’ of driving like that…I would have to stay overnight! I do hope that the week(s) ahead see you seriously getting into the house change thing if that continues to be what your heart and head want! Have a good week! Denyse
April 17, 2016
I’ve not really had to do this much driving in a day before Denyse, so hopefully it’s okay. The biggest problem will be coming home when it’s dark as the roads are all pretty isolated. There’s always a lot of roadkill about so the threat of kangaroos etc on the roads.
And I’ve started moving on the house thing… finally!
April 17, 2016
I read the new Katie Fforde. It was fluffy & lightly romantic- and exactly what I needed. Now I’m dreaming of moving to Scotland- and have already forgotten the part about the short winter days doing my head in. Have a great week.
April 17, 2016
Gosh, you’ve had a rather busy week. I’m afraid my reading is rather limited these days. I live on the border of NSW & Qld, and I am SO pleased we’re staying to get a glimpse of cooler weather too … can’t wait to break out the jeans and boots! 🙂 #LovinLifeLinky
April 17, 2016
I don’t do jeans but yes, am looking forward to sweatshirts and tracksuit pants etc… (for slouching around the house) and not to mention my flannelette PJs!
April 17, 2016
I’ve just started on a teen fiction book my step-daughter is obsessed with- seems okay so far!
April 17, 2016
Hope you enjoy it. I’ve read a couple of YA books lately and have enjoyed them!
April 17, 2016
I just got a subscription to Audible so I could encouarge myself to walk, Deborah. I’ve been wanting to start the Outlander series for such a long time – but there’s so many and the books are kinda big – so I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I’m now on book 3 and have listened to them as audiobooks AND the best part, it actually motivates me to walk! I actually *look forward* to walking. Because I’m not walking at all, I’m in Scotland and that time just flies!
Am heading overseas on Wednesday for a holiday which means the books building up on my iPad will finally get a working over! I dont think I’ll read them on the plane because I’m rather hoping they might have the first season of Outlander I can watch as I’ve been holding off on that, but I’ll be reading over the 3 &1/2 weeks because holidays = reading to me. I feel happy just at the prospect 🙂
Love TJ Hamiliton! She’s fab, isn’t she?
April 17, 2016
I used to listen to music when I walked and exercised but sadly haven’t done much of that lately Amy! Perhaps if I can drop a bit of weight…. But yes, loving audiobooks for the car.
And yes, TJ’s great!
April 17, 2016
Music doesn’t cut it for me. A hot guy in a kilt??…..no contest 🙂
April 17, 2016
Sounds like you have a busy week ahead! Audio books are such a good idea for long car trips!
April 17, 2016
Yes, I didn’t get organised enough to do any proper browsing so got desperate and downloaded a cheap copy of Wuthering Heights. Not sure it’ll be particularly entertaining but it’s ages since I read it and I remember little!
April 17, 2016
I’ve been so slow with the two books I’ve got going at the moment.
One In A Million Boy looks interesting. Might be the motivation I need to finally finish my current reads.
SSG xxx
April 17, 2016
Yes, I finished One in a Million Boy tonight and it was a lovely read!
April 17, 2016
Even though is not my genre I want to read the Obsession so badly! 🙂 Enjoy all that driving with a great audio book 🙂
April 17, 2016
Thanks Daniela!
April 17, 2016
I’m interested to know what you decided about the house. Our temps up here have ranged from about 23 down to 14. Lovely! Brought out the Ugg boots already.
April 17, 2016
I think we got down to 19C last night. (I’d been out babysitting and was driving home at 11.45pm and my car said 19C… I was ecstatic as I’m waiting for winter!)
April 17, 2016
I wish we had 30°C weather, Deb! It’s finally getting better here, but that also means that there’s a lot of pollen.
Your new books look great! and I’m so curious about The One in a Million Boy!
Drive carefully tomorrow, have a wonderful week and happy reading 🙂
April 17, 2016
Thanks Lexxie. It will certainly be a long day….
April 17, 2016
I prefer winter to the warm weather too and by winter I mean, around the weather you guys have!
Good luck with the drive tomorrow and I hope you find an awesome audio to listen to.
Happy reading and have a wonderful week!
April 17, 2016
Thanks Nick, and yes I’m lucky on the mid East coast of Australia… although it can get damned hot in summer!
April 17, 2016
Having to spend so much time in the car during the day is exhausting.I hope you are able to find a good audiobook to listen to.
April 17, 2016
I was desperate and disorganised so downloaded Wuthering Heights. Gah!
April 17, 2016
It’s finally starting to cool down here, too. I’m very excited, I hate hot weather – lol. Have a great week 🙂
April 17, 2016
I hate the heat too Maree! Hope you have a nice week too!
April 17, 2016
Oh I love Agatha Raisin. Do you listen to audiobooks on these long car trips? I saw your bath pick on facebook last night and looked up the title. I hope it is a good one. Hope you get to read a little more this week, but one book is still good.
April 17, 2016
I was okay with the one book as I was out 4 or so nights last week Kimberley and one of the nights I was home I’d had a long drive and just sat mindlessly in front of the TV!
I haven’t read Agatha Raisin but saw the episode based on this book on TV!
April 17, 2016
Oh goodness, ever-growing TBRs seem to be a common problem between all of us 😉 Probably the nicest problem to have though!
Past The Shallows sounds like something I need to add to mine!
Drive safe tomorrow!
April 17, 2016
I know Annika – I hate that I moan about all of these books I have to read… I have to remind myself that if that’s my biggest problem, I really need to count my blessings!
April 17, 2016
This is a great round up! I wish I had more time to read your daily posts this month. With all this travel I am being a very rude blogger and not doing much blog hopping right now.
Thanks for joining the Lovin’ Life Linky!
April 17, 2016
Oh I completely understand Leanne. Since I started work I struggle to do much blog reading during the week. I only work part-time but tend to binge-blog-read in fits and starts and do a lot of it on the weekend… often reading several days worth of posts!
April 17, 2016
I’m glad it’s getting some cooler for you, Deborah! Of course, we’re celebrating our warmer spring weather this last week! I’ve had windows open some during the day. So nice.
It’s great you got to go to an event for a local author. And you have a lot of driving coming up. I hope that goes well and that you find a good audiobook to listen to. I listened to Quiche of Death a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Very funny in parts.
April 20, 2016
I actually the Agatha Raisin TV production of Quiche of Death and was surprised I hadn’t heard of the series before!
April 17, 2016
We are just getting spring here and so happy to have nicer weather! I see you have A Window Opens in your pile of books there. I really enjoyed and hope you do too. Have a great week!
April 20, 2016
Ah Grace, so many books, so little time. I need to do some resorting of my books to work out what’s next!
April 17, 2016
Lovely blog, Deborah! Loving your logo, wish I could do that all day!! I am taking up your recommendation of Past the Shallows, I would love to read more out of Australia. And WOW! on your April challenge, one post a day is quite impressive 🙂
April 18, 2016
I know what it’s like to only read book a week, it’s rough! I hope that you get to read more this week. I actually kind of like road trips. I find it really peaceful and fun to just drive and listen to a story. Hope that you have a safe trip!
~Anna @Adventures with a Book Nerd
April 18, 2016
Love Nora Roberts – she a go to author for me. Hope you enjoy the cooler weather. Here it is heating up after the long winter.
April 20, 2016
I enjoyed The Obsession Lauren. I enjoy Roberts’ JD Robb books more than her others (a bit less romance and a bit more murder and mayhem!) but know what you mean!
April 18, 2016
I loved your post…and the other posts about feeling like a fraud and “being Goldilocks.” I also read the one about what we share with others. I thought of examples of people who put so much out there that I cringe. (BTW, you are not one of those!).
I love that you share situations, thoughts, and feelings that most of us can relate to…that’s what connecting is all about.
Good luck with the search for the “just right” new place. Thanks for visiting my blog.
April 20, 2016
Thanks Laurel! x
April 18, 2016
I was reading the same book all week too. But I’m trying not to stress about how many books I read as they are meant to be my stress relief not another stress inducer. And I’m dreaming about 30c weather, my bones are cold!
April 20, 2016
I realised Trish that I didn’t really feel guilty about my lack of reading, but I thought I should. I had other stuff on and sometimes… I just want to camp in front of the TV. So, I think I stress less about the reading than I used to.
April 18, 2016
One book isn’t too bad. Especially if it’s a good one. 😉
Awesome that you reviewed a cook book.. I loooooooove cooking. Maybe I should try reviewing one someday.
Good luck with the long drive tomorrow and I hope you have a fabulous week! 😉
April 20, 2016
Gah Maureen… you’ve just reminded me I’ve made nothing from it yet. Must get onto that!
April 18, 2016
Deb! I’m glad to hear you only read one book. Now I don’t feel so bad, myself. I’ve never actually read a Nora Roberts book.
April 20, 2016
Lauren I usually only select Nora Roberts’ books that seem to offer a good balance between romance and suspense. I don’t ‘really’ enjoy straight romance and am more into thrillers and crime fiction. I do enjoy her JD Robb ‘In Death’ series though!
April 18, 2016
Driving for work is what got me into audio books, in fact it’s the only time I listen to them. Hope you find one that helps you while away the hours…those are long drives! Have a good week. Emma
April 20, 2016
It does work for me Emma. I had a really long drive on Monday and I might have otherwise been bored silly, but I was listening to Wuthering Heights. (Which I’m not loving – and from memory – didn’t when I read it) but still….
April 18, 2016
I spy Agatha Raisin, I haven’t read any of the books but they had a tv special here last year and it was really enjoyable.
Safe driving and I hope you get a good audiobook.
April 20, 2016
I might have seen the same TV special Heather – it was the episode based on this book – The Quiche of Death. I watched it even though I hadn’t heard of Agatha Raisin.
April 18, 2016
I read a bunch of books this week. I too usually only read at night and I probably got through so many because they were only 2 to 3 hour reads. I do stay in bed until about 8 or 9 on the weekends and get in some reading then too.
My Sunday Post
April 20, 2016
I had this weird rule (when I took time off work) that I wasn’t allowed to watch TV or read during the day. I had to try to do money-earning type stuff at my desk – even if it was just blogging. So I’ve not gotten back into the reading-during-the-day habit. Or even reading in bed. I only read in the bath at the moment Laura which I know is weird. Although it’s my transition time – between the end of the day (whether I’m at work or at home) and the evening.
April 18, 2016
I’ve been slow with my reading lately too. I *finally* managed to read three books last week for the first time a while, but one of them was a graphic novel, so I kind of cheated lol.
You’re doing great on your post everyday thing though! And I swear you’re like reading my mind with some of your posts lol.
Sorry about the long drives this week. I used to do a lot of driving, but I didn’t even think to use audiobooks back then. At least you’ll be able to make good use of the time!
April 20, 2016
Oh yes Kristen, audiobooks have certainly been helping on the drives. I have a short drive today (1hr each way) for a meeting and am looking forward to continuing with my current book – Wuthering Heights.
April 18, 2016
I’m lucky if I finish a book a week so you are doing better than me lol. I also listen to audiobooks in the car and they do help on long trips. I hope you find something good to listen to and have a great week!
April 20, 2016
I usually get through 3 books a week, but it does depend a little on what else is happening. I’ve got a bit of other stuff going on at the moment so slowed down a little!
April 18, 2016
I’ve been extremely slow on the reading front. I haven’t read in two weeks. Eeek! That is one very long drive for a single day! Hope you have a great week, Deb!
April 20, 2016
I think life can get in the way sometimes and I’m getting better at not stressing about it. Hopefully publishers realise we have other commitments. (And it’s not like we’re getting paid and have set deadlines, so…)
April 19, 2016
Sounds like you have a busy busy week ahead. I am ready for summer to start here, it has been a long, wet winter. I am happy to pass it along to you, though I don’t think you will get near the amount of rain we did in the Pacific Northwest this year.
April 20, 2016
I hope not Heidi – we had quite a bit of flooding a few years ago and it wasn’t very pleasant!!!
April 19, 2016
My average is about one a week–one and a half at most–and so I’m impressed regardless. 🙂 That’s quite a lot of driving you did! I sit at a desk most of the day, and rarely see the sunshine unless I look out the window. I kind of miss the days I was in a position where I was out and about more. The author event sounded like fun! I am glad you were able to go. Good luck with everything you have to do this week. I hope it goes well!
April 20, 2016
I actually used to like sitting at my desk and hated to have to go out to meetings… but this new job is very much centred around stuff happening regionally so until things really get started (out there) it’s not as busy at my desk. (And I like to be busy!)
April 19, 2016
Will be looking forward to your One in a Million review and the Nicky P one. Haha – purchasing ‘the real book’, love that, glad you enjoyed the audio.
April 19, 2016
Wow, it sounds like you’ve definitely been having a busy week with the long drives and everything! The author event sounds like fun. Paula Hawkins is coming to my city and having a free event here, you should see if she’ll be close to you as well! Have a lovely week ahead Debbish.
