Bookish habits – my reading style

Tuesday, December 9, 2014 Permalink

I was tagged a couple of weeks ago by the lovely Bec from The Plumbette to answer some questions about my reading habits. An easy one for this obsessive reader!

Do you snack while you read?
IMG_1419Nope. Not at all. In fact the only times I’m not tempted to eat are when I’m writing or when I’m reading. Though I think it’s just cos I need my hands!

Of course as I mostly read in the bath in the evening I do occasionally partake in a wine or champagne while reading. But I’m fairly sure they’re not considered snacks, but sustenance to keep my strength up and exhaustion at bay. (Incidentally, the bottle in the pic on the left was a localish sparkling shiraz I discovered last year. Mostly I have Yellowglen 65 / Jewel cos of the whole low alcohol / low calorie thing!)

Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
I don’t write in my books but when I was young I often defaced them – adding call numbers (sort of) and adding my name in a tidy and legible fashion (below, to the side of my mother’s writing!). And as an aside, I indulge in big eye-rolls when others feel compelled to correct typos etc in published books. Sure I see them and it frustrates me but who the hell does it benefit from scribbling in the friggin’ book! Argh!

Fiction, non-fiction, or both?
Fiction only. No questions.

Hard copy or ebooks?
Unfortunately I mostly receive eBooks for review purposes, however I much prefer hard copy cos when it comes to books I’m a hoarder and I like to look at my prettys…

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?
Sadly my ahem slightly obsessive nature means I need to read to the end of a chapter, or scene or similar.

What are you currently reading?
I’m in between books. I’m writing this on Tuesday night but I’ve already read TWO books since Sunday.

What is the last book you bought?
9780733632341Two books recently which is weird cos – although I once bought lots of books – I’m now on a pretty tight budget and not allowed to buy books. At all.

I bought Nest  by Inga Simpson and JD Robb’s latest (cos I’m collecting the series) Festive in Death.

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can you read more than one at a time?
One. At. A. Time.

Do you have a favourite time of day and/or place to read?
Night. In the bath. I’m not sure why or when it started but that’s about it nowadays. I’m hoping to have a couple of weeks off work at Christmas and will be interested to see if I allow myself to lie about and read during the day!

Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over?
I’m prone to be obsessive so if I find an author I like I read EVERYTHING they’ve written. In fact I have so many favourite series the topic deserves its own blog post.

However…I have some ‘comfort’ authors. They’re my go-to authors whose books I can read again and again – and they always make me feel better: JD Robb, Martha Grimes, John Sandford, Robert B Parker (and his bevy of helpers since his death). I’m sure there are others but… they’re the little group who most come to mind.

I’m supposed to tag some people, but I’ll let you self-select if you feel like joining in. Otherwise, choose any one of these questions and share your answer below!

This isn’t particularly wordless, but I’m linking with Trish from My Little Drummer Boys for her Wordless Wednesday post nonetheless.

MayBe I should start reading in the bath, I do too much snacking while I’m curled up on the lounge with a book or draped over my kitchen bench.

It does keep me sidetracked Shelleyrae. Last night I spent nearly 3hrs in the bath reading. (Read Hades during that time!)

I have a lot of similar reading habits to you. Only fiction!! Only one book at a time. Only at night (because it makes me feel so blahh to read during the day). I will never read in the bath though – I’d either ruin the book or my kindle.

Ah yes, a lot of my books have wrinkled pages but my iPad has a LifeProof cover so it’s waterproof. (Just in case!)

I prefer hard copies too. I don’t like reading from a screen. Do you ever worry you’ll drop your book in the bath? lol

I’ve gotten books wet before Min… but not too much so!

I am a hard copy girl. As a reader … and as an author. Although I have caved recently and am slowly rolling out my books as eBooks on Amazon. I have only ever read one eBook. I like the hard copy. The smell, the feel, the ability to take it in the bath and read it on the beach.
The bath is my first go to point for reading!

Yay! Glad it’s not just me reading in the bathtub!

You are what I’d call a real reader Deb. You’d get on very well with my mother, sister and sister-in-law. Mum goes to the library once a week and reads at least seven books a week. I reckon my sister-in-law probably reads more. I think I only read about one book every two weeks although I’ve started reading on my treadmill lately which gives me more time.

Someone on Instagram last night kinda asked what people were doing. I said I’d just gotten out of the bath after nearly 3hrs and an entire book. I wondered if that was weird but it occurred to me there was nothing on TV and I’m loath to spend nights on the computer when I’m at (a) desk all day – mostly I read cos there’s nothing else to do and it’s a time each night I really look forward to!

I think reading is a much more productive thing to do than watching the idiot box.

I kinda like the mindless of the idiot box though! (Although I am pretty specific about what I’ll watch. I never put it on just for company etc. In fact I mostly tape stuff and watch it later.)

Great answers, loved reading your comments. I do most (if not all) of my reading in bed at night time. I can’t read in the bath at all, because my arms get cold and I have wet hands. You must have a pretty good system for this as well as keeping the water nice and warm.

Yes, I do occasionally top it up! (Thank god there are no more water shortages!)

I’ve tried reading in the bath but I once dropped the book in the bath and I had to wait for it to dry to read because the pages stuck together like a soppy mess. I’m looking forward to when I can read more for myself. I really love a good book. x

Ah yes, I’ve had the wet pages issue before, but it’s usually just a corner! 😉

Very interesting Deb, and I agree with only one book at a time! Love your book shelf. I could read all day if I had the time…
