It’s Monday. What am I reading?

Sunday, January 4, 2015 Permalink

It’s Monday and time for me to return to work. Alas.

I suspect many others are also starting back today after the holiday break. I’m hoping to get back into my reading and writing rhythm as well, so I’m again linking up with Sheila at Book Journey to share my recent reading.

Read last week

In a ridiculously low-reading week I read one book. Yes, you heard me right… ONE.

I’d like to be able to say that I was SO busy with important life-changing stuff that I just didn’t have time to pick up a book. But it’s not the case.

In Certain Circles

The book in question – In Certain Circles  – was actually a bit of a fizzer despite its potential, so I’ve already reviewed it in Goodreads.

Posted last week

I shared my review of Tami Hoag’s Cold Cold Heart,  which I enjoyed. I’m not sure why I don’t read more of her novels but recall a negative experience in the long-forgotten past. It must be time for me to forgive and forget and get back into her work.

I posted my review of Amy Hatvany’s Outside the Lines  – a book about mental illness and societal norms, wrapped up in a moving story to ensure it’s not confronting for readers.

I also blogged about a house swap with a difference. My mother and I switched houses for 4-5 days last week – which is less weird than it sounds. I live by the beach and wanted to give my mum time there and I like the idea of escaping from my old life a little.

What I actually did last week

I bunkered down and slept A LOT.

napping

I also watched a heap of DVDs which I borrowed from the local video library.

• Divergent – enjoyed more than I expected
• Grand Budapest Hotel – okay, but took me a while to warm to it
• Hunger Games 2 (Catching Fire) – enjoyed though was a tad confused by the end (ie. which of the other game players were in on the ruse!)
• Hobbit 2 (Desolation of Smaug) – watched only for the Richard Armitage factor
• The Host – based on Stephenie Meyer’s ‘other’ book. I lasted about 10 mins and then put it aside. So it was true to the book! 😉
• Game of Thrones s2 – I lasted about 15 minutes and remembered why I hadn’t rushed to watch the second season 3-4 years after watching the first. #meh

I also started watching my own purchases and rewatched s1 of Continuum. And… by the time this post goes live I’ll have watched s2.

Next week’s reading

I’m going to kick off my 2015 Oz author reading with Bronwyn Parry’s Storm Clouds  – which sounds like it will offer up a good mix of romance and suspense.

Storm Clouds by Bronwyn Parry

And then there’s Fleur Smithwick’s How To Make A Friend,  which I had thought I’d read this past week… but, well…

I’ve also got The Rosie Project  and The Rosie Effect  by Graeme Simsion which my mother borrowed from a friend, so ‘might’ try to get to them as well.

What’s on your agenda (reading or otherwise) for the next week?

I read the Rosie Project last month and enjoyed it. Good Book.

Yes, I’ve heard good things about it. Many have been less positive about its successor, but I do realise it’s probably hard to follow up something that’s been so popular.

I’m reading Elizabeth Is Missing at the moment. I’m pretty sure I took that recommendation from one of your book reviews and I’m really enjoying it. Haven’t decided yet if Elizabeth really is missing or not yet.

Oh I loved that book Char – yes, you would have gotten the recommendation from me cos it was one of my fave books of last year. My dad had dementia and I really like how the issue was treated in the book!

We went through Maryborough on Saturday and I kept my eyes peeled in case I saw you but you were probably at your Mum’s house watching DVDs. I’ve just told Scotto to look out for Continuum because I haven’t seen it yet.

I really enjoyed S1 of Continuum. I’ve nearly finished S2 – I don’t love it as much but have 3 eps left to watch, so….

A house swap does sound interesting! You’ve had a busy week. I don’t average as much as one book/week. I hope we link up through It’s Monday! What Are You Reading. I am planning on participating in it regularly, if not weekly.

What a great idea to swap houses with your Mum. i think you just swapped reading for viewing – that was heaps. I always thing I’ll view something but am very slow about it. I like the look of Storm Clouds, will chase that down to read a little more aboutit.

Ah yes, I used to watch A LOT of TV (TV on DVD especially) but since I made my seachange and stopped working full-time I don’t have the extremes of work vs down-time, so don’t tend to watch as much tv.

When I read about house swapping it made me think of the movie The Holiday, which we watched again last week. I love that movie. It can make me laugh every time. Looks like you had a good time off watching some good movies too. 🙂

I’ve never read anything by Tami Hoag – not really my genre (I have tried it but I get bored). I love the cover of In Certain Circles – it’s enough to make me want to read it! Don’t know anything about it though!!

I’m way behind on TV and movie watching. No time! There’s plenty I’d like to see. Ugh I haven’t even seen the Hobbit movies. Didn’t know Richard Armitage is in it, but that’d get me watching!!

Interested to hear what you think of Storm Clouds. So far I haven’t had all that much luck with the whole ‘rural romance’ sub-genre, such as it is. Got a few more to try though. Happy New Year!

Shannon I’m not usually a fan of the rural / outback Aussie thing either but am okay with the mystery / romance mix.

I’m a crime fiction / mystery lover so Hoag’s a good fit for me.

In Certain Circles intrigued me because the author wrote it in 1975 and then shelved it. I’d wondered why, but I can see her reasons were justified having read it.

me too … one book. *Sigh* not off to a great reading start and I didn’t view anything unless you count a dribble of news and 10 mins of The Croods lol. Your house swap sounds very relaxing. Have a great week and bring on the reading mojo for both of us 🙂

    • Debbish
      January 6, 2015

Yes Teddyree. I wasn’t too worried given the HUGE amount of stuff I watched on DVD! It was a nice change. I realised I’ve missed watching movies etc.

My husband and I spent a lot of time this past week hunkered down as well. I think it is totally necessary sometimes to do that. We watched the entire first season of The Originals! Lol. Have a great week!

I’ve never really watched The Originals Erin though suspect I’d probably like it!

I actually had a busy weekend and then stressed myself about planning for the year ahead and stuff I hadn’t done, so by the time I had to go to work I was a bit angsty. I know it won’t take long for that sensation to blow over though!

I have The Rosie Project on my Kindle, and it has been there a bit. I need to get to it. But I will add Storm Clouds too my books to watch for, cause the cover is intriguing. Does anyone else sometimes choose books by the cover?

    • Debbish
      January 6, 2015

I certainly do which I’m not sure is a good or bad thing?! Sometimes something will look too kitsch or gauche so I’ll give it a miss, only to find I’ve missed a great read. Of course the same is true of books with fabulous covers – they can be deceptively light-weight etc.

Swapping houses sounds like fun…I’d like to trade with my daughter…her place is bigger than mine and has a gigantic TV…LOL.

The beach would be better, though.

Glad you enjoyed your week; sometimes watching movies is a wonderful break. I also enjoyed Divergent more than I expected.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Debbish
      January 6, 2015

Yes, I’m keen to see the next instalment of Divergent. As I watched the second Hunger Games movie at the same time, the similarities were obvious… but I think I preferred Divergent more!

As you know Jo, I’m not usually into romance / outback Aussie type novels (not sure why the latter) but I did enjoy this novel. The mix of romance and mystery is always nice.

The Rosie Project was a lot of fun! We just watched The Grand Budapest Hotel too. It was okay but a bit weird and slow. We are tearing our way through old episodes of Arrested Development though! And that probably says something about my husband and me. 😉 Enjoy your week!

      January 6, 2015

Completely agree re Grand Budapest Hotel. It wasn’t at all like I imagined it to be and did take some time to get used to!!!

Your house swap sounds wonderful. I’d like to swap with my mother right now. She lives in sunny Florida and I am in blowing snow Michigan. My hubby and I got caught up on our DVR’d programs over the holiday break. Off to check out what you thought of Tami’s book.

    • Debbish
      January 6, 2015

Hi Nise. I enjoyed Tami’s book. Like I said – it made me wonder why they weren’t on my ‘must read’ list – you know the list of authors who you read whenever they publish something new!

      January 6, 2015

Ah yes, the ‘change is as good as a holiday’ adage. I really didn’t think of it like that, but it was true. We must try to do it on weekends or even briefly more often! I ‘hope’ she enjoyed her stay at my place and wasn’t too bored. When I lived in Brisbane (3-4hrs drive from her) she and my dad used to stay for long chunks of time so I’m sure she was used to my place there and felt comfy. Now I’m only 30mins drive away she only has a night here or there so I didn’t think she felt as ‘at home’ here. Hopefully that’s changed.
