It’s been a fairly slow week here on Debbish, with a quiet yet impressive hush falling over the blog on Tuesday and remaining in place until Saturday.
I’m fairly sure my readers have been waiting in some sort of thrall, nervous about making any movement lest I decide never to return. But… never fear, cos I’m back.
What I read
I started the week with a bang, or with a novella – Nick Earls’ Venice – the second in his Wisdom Tree series.
And then leapt over a large TBR pile to read Clare Mackintosh’s I See You. Clare’s I Let You Go was one of my favourite books of last year and offered possibly the twistiest twist I have ever came across.
And finally – after many days of not reading. Or sleeping really… I read CJ Carver’s Spare Me The Truth. Interestingly I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it but once I started reading I could not put it down.
What I wrote
Very little obviously. But all three of my posts here this week were book-ish:
Working out whodunnit – in which I share my secret and highly technical methodology for guessing whodunnit in fiction and on TV
People Who Knew Me by Kim Hooper – a book about someone who fakes her own death but later comes to regret it
Long Time Lost by Chris Ewan – a thriller I enjoyed about a privatised witness protection organisation.
I also posted my monthly book wrap-up over at Styling You and – as usual – would really appreciate it if you popped over to give it some comment love…
What I did
I wasn’t well so was mostly AWOL. I had headaches and my sleeplessness caught up with me. It was – quite frankly – pretty ugly. So naturally I escaped to my mother’s where I spent a solid 13hrs straight in bed.
I finally got my doctor’s letter which will allow me to go to the gym I’ve joined… but my BP was up so I have to do a day-long monitoring thing this week.
I also did some DVD-watching while laying low at my mother’s. (Spoiler alert: LOVED Spotlight; and was a tad underwhelmed by Deadpool.)
As for next week
I received some new books which need to be added into my TBR pile…
I also hope to finally get to the gym for the first time… so wish me luck!
And that’s about it for my book blogging and reading this week. So, what about you….
Did you do any reading last week? What do you have planned for the week?
As usual I’m linking up with Leanne from Deep Fried Fruit for the Lovin’ Life Linky; and Kimberly from The Caffeinated Reviewer for the Sunday Post; and Kathryn from The Book Date for “It’s Monday!”
May 29, 2016
You read some interesting books, and I liked your whodunit post. The Dry looks good but man it doesn’t come out in the US until next year…sighs…by then I will forget about it. 🙁 Well I put it on my wishlist so maybe I won’t. 🙂
May 29, 2016
The book will probably come out (there) in time for the movie Stormi!!!
May 29, 2016
I loved Spotlight but I also loved Deadpool. I have a bit of a teenage boy mentality 🙂 I just watched Grimsby and laughed my head off. That says it all really. I sympathise with the pain and sleeplessness. I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night with horrible neck spasms. Hope they go soon.
May 29, 2016
I was really excited about Deadpool Michelle and almost went to see it at the movies. I liked the subtle jokes embedded in the dialogue. I thought a lot of them were really clever, but some of the other bigger and obvious jokes were a bit juvenile / slapstick-ish.
Sorry to hear about your neck, I hope it improves soon! x
May 29, 2016
This week’s reads look great. Just what I need for the plane next week!
Have a lovely week!

May 29, 2016
No worries. Enjoy… if you get some reading done!
May 29, 2016
Hope you’re feeling better… Long Time Lost sounds intriguing with the privatised witness protection deal (neat concept) and I liked your post on whodunnits. To be honest my track record on picking the culprit is mixed- sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. But then I don’t read a ton of mysteries- a few a year usually- so maybe I’m not going at it right. 🙂 But is is fun when you do figure it out. And I suspect you’re right- there probably is more pressure now to be twistier and turnier, to keep people guessing. 🙂
May 29, 2016
As you know I read A LOT of mysteries / thrillers. A lot are very similar – some childhood incident the protagonist is hiding from / in denial about / reminded of and the past coming back to haunt them once they look into things. And of course domestic noir is very popular now – thanks to Gone Girl etc…
And yes, the privatised witness protection thing was new. Including the creating identities and new lives – new professions and digital footprints etc.. I really enjoyed that element!
May 29, 2016
Hope the sleeplessness etc passes, it sure is a pain in the butt. So happy to see your list of books for the monthly blog post includes Natasha Lester.
May 29, 2016
Oh yes, I’ve had weeks on end without getting to sleep before 2am. My doctor prescribed some pills but I’m nervous about taking them and when I do they have no impact. I thought my weight might be the issue (they’re for smaller body weights) so doubled them and still no impact. I think it’s just my mind going crazy. I’ve got a few apps on my phone I try but it’s almost worse after listening to something for 90mins during which I’m supposed to doze off!
May 29, 2016
Unfortunately no reading, writing or blogging for me the last two weeks. Glad to see you are back too 🙂 and feeling better Good luck at the gym. Enjoy!
May 29, 2016
Thanks Daniela! And yes… absolutely!
May 29, 2016
I am so envious of your copy of I See You…and also that you have the new Maggie O’Farrell.
I also loved Spotlight…it’s the kind of movie I would love for my collection…one I would watch more than once or twice.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts today…hope you feel better soon, and thanks for visiting my blog.
May 29, 2016
I’m thinking of starting the Maggie O’Farrell tonight actually Laurel so looking forward to it.
May 29, 2016
Unexpected breaks are good, in my opinion. I need to take one soon, maybe when I travel back to the US.
I read I Let You Go and I loved the twist, but was a bit disappointed overall. 🙁 The writing was phenomenal though! So, I’ll be definitely looking forward to I See You.
And I was very underwhelmed by Deadpool too!! I think the whole movie I may have laughed one time! It was too hyped up for me. 🙁
I hope this week is better for you and you feel better as well.
Take care and happy reading!
May 29, 2016
I thought I Let You Go ended up being a bit like a normal thriller towards the end, but really loved that twist.
May 29, 2016
Good luck at the gym! I’m also trying to get into this exercise regime that I’ve purchased (Zumba) to get healthy.
My luck with books this week wasn’t all that great lol, but I’m hoping for better things in the future.
May 29, 2016
I used to do a few dance-based exercise classes Leona, including Zumba but am way WAY too unfit nowadays to dive into something like that. Am thinking of starting with water aerobics.
May 29, 2016
Headaches suck :-/ But wow! You know you were tired when you sleep for 13 hours. Feel better! And good luck at the gym 🙂
May 29, 2016
My sleep is all over the place Kristen – the next two nights at mum’s I slept little. Alas (One of those nights I was awake until nearly 4am!) I know I’ve got a couple of things on my mind, so that’s probably all it is.
May 29, 2016
Nothing beats escaping to moms when you’re sick. Hope you’re feeling better. It was mostly dead on my blog too. Yay for the gym! Get it, girl! 😀
May 29, 2016
Perhaps it was the week for it Christy. I finally got around to doing some blog reading this morning and some of the posts I was reading were 10 days old. I wondered where the hell I’d been and what I’d been doing!
May 29, 2016
I hope you feel better soon. Headaches and not sleeping well sucks. I’ve had it this week as well so I feel your pain. I hope the day monitoring thing goes well.
May 29, 2016
Thanks Annemieke. I’ve only just discovered the monitoring thing involves having the BP monitor on your arm blowing itself up and down all day. Good god. I’d decided to work (as I’d stupidly scheduled meetings for my day off) so that won’t be very professional!
May 29, 2016
We watched Deadpool last night as a family. Holy crap! Probably should have put more thought into the MA15+ for the 12 year old. A bit graphic!
Thanks for joining the Lovin’ Life Linky. I would have been beside myself if you hadn’t shown up. Nervous as all hell.
May 30, 2016
🙂
I liked some of the one-liners in Deadpool, but I did start watching it with my 72yr old mother which was a bit disconcerting. She wasn’t enjoying it so left…. I still remember watching Deadwood with her years ago – not realising how much the ‘c’ word featured!
May 29, 2016
I hope you’ve gotten completely rid of your headaches, and that you’re able to sleep once more during the night 🙂
Your new books look very good, and quite varied, too.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.
May 30, 2016
Alas the headaches are still there Lexxie. I think perhaps I just need to accept that I might sleep really badly but only need to get through 3 days in the office each week and can then sleep whenever or how much I like!
May 29, 2016
The cover of ‘I See You’ is so gorgeous! I was also pretty underwhelmed by Deadpool despite how much everyone seems to rave about it.
Have a great week! Happy Reading!
Stacy Renee @ Lazy Day Literature
May 30, 2016
It has got a lovely cover hasn’t it Stacy? I’ve only got the electronic copy at this point but have requested a print copy from the Oz publisher (before the o/s publisher granted me an ARC).
May 30, 2016
Hope you are feeling better and are able to enjoy your week this week! “I See You” is gorgeous! I’ve not read anything by this author but I think I’ll be picking this one up if only because of the cover 😉 Have a wonderful week!
My Sunday Post
May 30, 2016
I really loved her first book, I Let You Go Lillian. This one is different. Still good but doesn’t have the twist midway that almost had me dropping my iPad into the bath in shock!
May 30, 2016
I was reading three books this week, then Jennifer L. Armentrout’s new book came in the mail (it’s wonderful and I recommend that you read it. It’s called The Problem with Forever). All other reading plans immediately flew out the window. I could hear my TBR pile yelling at me from some far away galaxy (because it’s so big that’s where it has to live). Hope that the gym goes well for you, and have a good week!
May 30, 2016
The Problem with Forever! What a wonderful title – will def have to check it out.
May 30, 2016
Good luck at the gym! I haven’t been to one in so long I’m afraid I’ve forgotten how all the machines work! Hope you’re feeling better and that the escape to your mom’s worked. I See You looks so good and Claire Mackintosh is an author I’ve been wanting to read. None of your new books look familiar so I’m sure I’ll end up with a few new additions to the TBR when you talk about them. Have a great week!
May 30, 2016
Ah yes, I just need to now work out when I’ll get to the gym. I’m planning on just starting with water aerobics Katherine so hopefully later in the week I can get to a class!
May 30, 2016
Have fun at the gym! I am tentatively trying to restart jogging!
Hope you have a great week and enjoy all you new books especially the Maggie O Farrell book, I was eyeing up the hardback yesterday but resisted!
May 30, 2016
Ohhh jogging Heather! Good luck and well done!
I’ve started with the Mark Billingham this week but suspect the O’Farrell will be next.
May 30, 2016
I think Deadpool is the rare comic book movie that’s enhanced by knowing more about the character. Once you get to know him you sort of expect puerile teenage boy style toilet humour so it makes it easier.
Loved that novella by Nick Earls. Such an amazing writer. Nice guy too. I met him at the Brisbane Writers Festival a few years back.
May 30, 2016
I did a workshop with him last year and had met him at author events and have always found him to be very very funny. I think that self-deprecating wit comes across in his books.
May 30, 2016
This week is going to fly by. Monday is a holiday here in the States (and I have to drop the man off at the airport to fly out for a funeral). Tuesday and Wednesday are the last two days of school for my students; Thursday officially wraps up my entire school year – even though my room is basically all packed, I still have to show up and get properly signed out. Friday I will finally finish my audiobook and update all that I’ve neglected on the blog. I’m ready to get my summer on!
May 30, 2016
Oh… summer holidays! I hope the week does fly by though it sounds like it will. x
May 30, 2016
I wish you the best of success at the gym. Hope you caught up on your sleep. I plan to do that tomorrow, just lay around and do nothing. I Let You Go is one of my most anticipated reads.
May 30, 2016
Thanks Nise’ and I think you’ll love I Let You Go! It didn’t get a lot of media coverage here in Australia and I didn’t even get a chance to get a review copy of it – though had it very early on from its UK publisher!
May 30, 2016
I have heard so much about Spotlight, I’m really looking forward to watching it, though the holds list at the library is sooooo looooong…..
May 30, 2016
Thankfully the Blockbuster store in my mother’s hometown had stacks of them available for rent. I do worry that place will close down soon!
May 30, 2016
I have This Must be the Place on my TBR list. As always, interesting week of Books. Happy Reading!
May 30, 2016
I think it’s next on my agenda! And thanks!
May 30, 2016
Nothing like escaping to mom’s! Hope you feel better. I really want to see Spotlight – Glad you enjoyed it. Have a great week!
May 30, 2016
The Catholic Church’s response to abuse allegations continues to be a big thing here in Australia Grace (there’s been a Royal Commission going for a few years) so very interesting.
May 30, 2016
Summer’s the time when I kick my exercising up a bit…walk most mornings, swim a couple of mornings, some biking, and yoga. Love summer!
May 31, 2016
Great to hear Deb. I’m afraid I’m a bit the opposite in summer… too hot to do anything!
May 30, 2016
What is UP with you, girlie?!?! I sure hope the exercising is gonna help fix things but that monitoring the BP thing for a day – that sucks dishwater!!! Sorry you have to do that! Mine BP was up over the winter but dropped back to normal as soon as I started exercising. I dodged that bullet! I’m 47 so everything is starting to fall off the rails now. BLECH!!!
It’s really cool to compare Aussie book covers to US covers. I actually end up liking your covers better. It’s like they get it right the second time around or something.
Thank goodness for home/mom’s, right?!!!!! 😀
May 31, 2016
I know Kristin… I’m 48 so falling to pieces as well! Though I think the BP monitoring thing was okay yesterday. My readings seemed quite low all day. It’d been up at my doctor’s (though I’m on medication) and she wanted to check if it was white coat syndrome, so had me wear this thing for the day. (Ugh…. I’m so glad it’s off!)
The cover thing is interesting isn’t it? I wonder what publishers think the differences are: i.e what appeals to different countries and cultures?
May 30, 2016
I didn’t know Claire Mackintosh had another book. 🙂
Busy week for you.
ENJOY your reading week!!

My It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?
May 31, 2016
I saw it a month or so ago on someone’s list Elizabeth and jumped out of my skin. I think I put it on my wishlist in NG and got approved. I’ve also requested it via its Aussie publisher as well though.
May 31, 2016
Oh I hope things get better for you health wise. Joining a gym is a great idea, I hope your b/p plays nice and gets lower. I got Before the Fall as well at BEA and I can’t wait to read it. Great haul this week. Have a great week!
May 31, 2016
Thanks Karen. I think the BP monitoring thing was all good. Though I’ve got something akin to a phantom limb and it feels like the cuff is still attached to my arm!
May 31, 2016
I thought I Let You Go was new and now I See You is out. Wow, how quickly to fall behind on reading and whats new. There are really far to many amazing books and authors out there.
May 31, 2016
I received an advance copy of I Let You Go via its international publisher so think I got it ultra early (so a year ago or so). I think I See You might not be out here for a few months yet.
And yes, I know what you mean about amazing authors… I was looking on the Crime Writers of Australia internet site yesterday and there are SO MANY BOOKS I’ve not heard of and I’m sure heaps are fabulous.
May 31, 2016
I will actually be listening to I Let You Go, so glad to hear it was a favorite. I stopped listening when I started physically reading The Woman in Cabin 10…as I prefer that as I read and listen to multiple books that each is a different genre..that way there is no confusion!
May 31, 2016
I’ve got The Woman in Cabin 10 as well Kimberly! I’m wondering how I Let You Go will translate via audio. The HUGE twist is midway through. I’d read there was one so thought I was ready… but I still wasn’t!
May 31, 2016
Sorry to hear you were feeling ucky. And sorry that you were underwhelmed with Deadpool. We all loved it. It’s not award winning material, but it was lots of fun for us. Though a bit gory. lol
May 31, 2016
Ha! It was certainly gory! Mind you – a bit stupidly so… which meant it wasn’t too revolting.
I’m a big fan of witty dialogue and liked that about it.
May 31, 2016
I really need to see Deadpool soon. Good luck getting to the gym… I know, it’s so hard!! 🙂 Hope you have a fantastic week!
May 31, 2016
Thanks Lisa.
June 1, 2016
Oh looks like an interesting reading week!! Good on you joining the gym I hope you enjoy it (as much as anyone enjoys it).
June 2, 2016
Fingers crossed Jess!
June 6, 2016
Wow! What great reads!
June 6, 2016
Thanks Megan. I’m certainly looking forward to them!
