ARC review: Murder at 30,000 feet by Susan Walter

Murder at 30,000 feet by Susan Walter is yet another excellent thriller from the American author who I discovered two years ago through Lie By The Pool. If you’re looking for a new-to-you author with an excellent backlist I highly recommend Walter, who is also a screenwriter and director… which I think is evident in her writing – placing readers firmly in the midst of the novel’s events through its narrative or ‘the action’, rather overly descriptive place-related prose. Here that action is fast-paced and, though we jump about in time a little, Walter ekes out the who and the why, creating tension and suspense.

Book review: Letters from Strangers by Susan Walter

I had no idea what to expect from Letters from Strangers by Susan Walter. I’ve read some of her thrillers and very much enjoyed them. This book was quite different but offered that same sense of surprise and a-ha! moment you come to expect from a thriller but there were no murders, and the mystery to be solved was more about past secrets and lies and long-smothered feelings. And this was a lovely read, I was swept up in everyone’s (connected) stories. The key characters are beautifully developed and complex, feeling very real and Walter addresses some issues that often go undiscussed. It certainly resonated with me for that reason.

ARC review: Running Cold by Susan Walter

In a recent review of one of her older books (Over Her Dead Body) I commented that I follow US author Susan Walter on social media, having loved a book of hers I read in 2023, Lie by the Pool. I noted a week or two ago she mentioned that an October 2024 release was available for early readers on review site, NetGalley, so I jumped on and requested it. At the time I had nothing awaiting my reading attention that’s being published in the next few weeks so started Running Cold on a Friday night after some work travel. And I was again hooked and kept reading until I finished the book.

Book review: Over Her Dead Body by Susan Walter

Over Her Dead Body by Susan Walter was an impulse purchase. I’ve not been getting many print books for review lately (indeed the only two I’ve received in recent weeks weren’t requested and both non-fiction… which I don’t read) so I’ve been downloading review copies from overseas publishers, many of which aren’t out for a while.

I very much enjoyed Walter’s Lie By The Pool last year and started following her online. It was timely then that she posted that two of her earlier books were on sale. They weren’t actually on special here in Australia but I decided to buy and download Over Her Dead Body as it sounded like the perfect read for a rainy Saturday night ‘in’. And – OMG – what a ride it was! So. Many. Twists. I loved it!

Book review: Lie by the Pool by Susan Walter

I’d had Lie by the Pool by Susan Walter awaiting me on my iPad for a while before getting to it. I’m not sure why I requested it, but something about it leapt out and I’ve seen other Aussie bookbloggers or bookstagrammers reading it too. In some ways it’s a proverbial sleeper. We come into the story part-way through. Bree has lost everything – her husband and house – and is living out of her car. When we meet her she’s sneaking into the poolhouse of a large house in Beverley Hills. It’s obvious that it’s familiar to her for some reason but that’s all we know. And that’s all we do know until Walter very cleverly starts pulling together multiple threads.
