Book review: Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

Monday, September 17, 2018 Permalink

I started reading this new release by the ever-popular Liane Moriarty after a dinner out with friends during which I spoke about a health retreat I’d been to in 2000. I’d planned four weeks in Italy (which is where I’ll be FINALLY when this review goes live) but at the time I was living in East Timor (in my previous life as a diplomat) and stressed out of my little brain; so instead blew the same amount of money on three weeks at a health retreat in the hinterland of the Gold Coast, called The Golden Door (which has now closed).

The experience was life-changing. At the time.

So it was very freaky when I lolled in the bath at 10pm after the dinner to make a start on Nine Perfect Strangers (not remembering anything about the blurb or the book) to discover it is – in fact – centred around the lives of nine (not-so-perfect) strangers who attend a health retreat. WAAAAAY freaky!

Audio book review: The Hypnotist’s Love Story by Liane Moriarty

I was an audiobook virgin when another book blogger mentioned them on Facebook. I commented that I hadn’t tried audiobooks and wasn’t sure they were for me. She’d won a stack of books in a competition and her prize sponsor, Bolinda, responded to my comment, saying if I sent them my details they’d send through a trial pack.

They didn’t know I was a book blogger, so there was no expectation… just the offer to try it out. Several CDs arrived only days later offering a few free recordings, and of particular interest to me was Liane Moriarty’s 2011 novel, The Hypnotist’s Love Story.

I’d only recently (and belatedly) read the much-lauded Big Little Lies, so was keen for more from the popular Aussie author.

Book review: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

I’m possibly one of the last people on the planet to read Liane Moriarty. Indeed a TV show or film based on the popular Aussie author’s 2014 novel, Big Little Lies, is already underway somewhere on the other side of the globe.

Every time someone raved about her I mumbled guiltily that I hadn’t gotten around to reading her work, but aimed to do so when I had time.

And finally… while microwave oven shopping last week I broke my no-buying-of-books rule when I discovered LBL on sale.
